SES Tlmače Signed Agreement with Cubans to Modernise Units 4, 5 and 6 in CTE NUEVITAS Power Station

During the 35th annual trade fair FIHAV 2017 HABANA, on 1st November 2017, SES a.s. Tlmače signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Union Eléctrica de Cuba with the subject of modernization of Units 4, 5 and 6 of CTE Nuevitas power station. The contract was formally signed in the presence of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic Mr. Vojtech Ferencz and the Vice-minister of Cuban Ministry for Foreign Trade and Investment - MINCEX, Mr. Antonio Carricante. For SES this is a further project intended for Cuban power engineering sector, the existing units were originally supplied by Czechoslovak companies. An undeniable advantage of SES is that the boiler shall be designed to fire Cuban “crudo” and SES is the only company with references for firing this type of fuel.

Nuevitas Power Station (CTE Nuevitas) was a common project of Czechoslovak companies that comprised the construction and commissioning of 6 units with boilers designed, fabricated and supplied by SES having the output of 3 x 280 tph for Units 1 to 3 and 3 x 435 tph of live steam for Units 4 to 6. The Units 1 to 3 are currently out of operation.

SES has already been investigating the possibility of modernisation of Units 4 to 6 for some time and currently there is a final stage of exclusive negotiations underway between UNE and SES focused on the scope of Unit 4 modernisation. Martin Paštika, General Manager of SES, has remarked: “SES is in a unique position on the Cuban market and we are pursuing several very interesting projects of power plants modernisation in the country. We believe to secure the support of EXIM SR in Nuevitas project financing, taking into account our very successful references in the projects executed in Cuba in the past…”. The crucial aspect of being successful in acquiring and executing this project will surely be the ability of SES to provide financing in the same way as in cases of previous projects executed by SES in Cuba. Among other issues MoU in its time schedule defines the progress of works in elaboration and submitting of the offer with the time of contract signature foreseen until the end of 2018.
